In the bustling city of Los Angeles, where diversity and opportunity abound, the role of educators and counselors becomes ever more critical in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. One such dedicated individual making a profound impact within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is Marina Herrera, a Pupil Services and Attendance (PSA) Counselor. With five years of experience under her belt, Marina has become a vital bridge between students, families, and the community, fostering growth, resilience, and success.

A Passion Born in Childhood

Marina’s journey into the world of education and counseling is deeply rooted in her childhood experiences. Inspired by her kindergarten teacher’s encouraging words, she was told from an early age that she would make a great teacher. This sentiment stayed with her, guiding her educational and professional choices. However, it wasn’t just her teacher who influenced her path. Marina’s grandmothers worked in schools, and their commitment to education was a guiding light, nurturing her passion for working with children.

“I’ve always wanted to work with kids and build them up,” Marina reflects. “They are the leaders of tomorrow.” This belief has been the driving force behind her career, motivating her to pursue a role where she could make a tangible difference in students’ lives.

Connecting Communities and Resources

As a PSA Counselor, Marina’s role goes beyond just providing guidance; it’s about building bridges. Her work allows her to connect families with the vast array of resources available in the community, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive. “Making those connections and seeing the families thrive is the best feeling,” she says. Whether it’s linking a family to after-school programs, mental health services, or financial aid resources, Marina takes pride in being a conduit for positive change.

Her approach is one of constant learning and growth. “I try to branch out to as many people as possible,” she explains. “I keep resources in mind when something is needed, and I love learning about new opportunities.” This proactive mindset enables her to stay informed about the latest resources and strategies, which she can then pass on to the families she serves.

A Legacy of Lasting Connections

When asked about the legacy she hopes to leave behind, Marina’s response is simple yet profound. “That my students and families come back to me over the years and want to share their successes with me,” she says. This enduring connection is a testament to the positive impact she has had on their lives. It’s not just about the immediate support she provides, but about the lasting relationships she builds, relationships that continue to inspire and uplift long after her students have moved on.

Words of Wisdom

For those aspiring to make a difference in their communities, Marina offers this advice: “Keep your passion burning, and keep pushing forward. You’ll achieve your goals if you think you can.” Her journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the belief that every child has the potential to lead.

As Marina Herrera continues her work with LAUSD, she remains a beacon of hope and support for countless students and families, proving that with the right guidance and resources, there are no limits to what our future leaders can achieve.
